About the Producers

Dr. Dan Tripps and Martin Kent first collaborated in 1998 when Martin Kent Productions was producing the History Channel documentary, Top Speed: Human Power. The film explored how human beings have used science and technology to increase their speed in various sports. As a leading authority on the subject of sports science, Dr. Tripps consulted and appeared on-camera throughout the film. The result was a highly successful documentary which Dr. Tripps thereafter incorporated into his curriculum at Seattle Pacific University.

Dan G. Tripps, Ph.D. is Chair of the Department of Physical Education & Exercise Science at Seattle Pacific University. His primary teaching responsibilities include the Psychology of Leadership and Achievement and Enhancing Human Performance.

After completing a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a Master’s Degree in Education, Dr. Tripps began his career as a teacher and swim coach in California where he developed several national champions and world-ranked athletes. In 1971, Dr. Tripps accepted a position as athletic director for an international school in the central African nation of Zaire. In addition to working with the expatriate community, Dr. Tripps served as an advisor for national sport development culminated by qualification of the national soccer team for the 1974 World Cup and technical planning for the 1974 Ali-Foreman World Heavy Weight Championship Fight.

After returning to the U.S. to complete his doctoral studies, Dr. Tripps began an academic career first as a university professor and then as a public school administrator when, in 1980, he was asked to assume the role of President and Executive Director of the 1984 Olympic Scientific Congress, the research conference affiliated with the Olympic Games. In 1982, in conjunction with his Olympic duties, Dr. Tripps founded Sport for Understanding organizing international exchanges of athletes and coaches serving as its first Executive Director and, later, as Trustee.

Due to his extensive international expertise, in 1986, Dr. Tripps became the U.S. Representative for Sport for All, a UNESCO program for technical training of teachers and coaches in developing countries. He joined the faculty of Seattle Pacific University that same year as Academic Dean of the School of Physical Education and Athletics, a position he held until 1995 when the unit was restructured into the department he now chairs within the College of Arts & Sciences. During his tenure at SPU, Dr. Tripps has distinguished himself as a leader in high profile events including the 1987 Washington State Centennial Commission’s Pacific Celebration, the 1990 Goodwill Games, and between 1992-2000, Project Raven, an effort by The Museum of Flight to design, build, and fly a record-setting human-powered aircraft.

Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, Martin Kent has produced over forty network documentaries during his distinguished career. Seen by countless millions, his work has been critically acclaimed and featured on NBC, PBS, A&E, History Channel, Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, Fox Sports and VH1, among others. Mr. Kent's range of subject matter has encompassed the Civil War, World War II, the Holocaust, the Civil Rights era, the assassinations of JFK, RFK and Martin Luther King Jr., the Patty Hearst kidnapping, sports heroes, rock music, archeology, aviation and wildlife.

Prior to his documentary career, Mr. Kent was a successful print journalist. His articles appeared in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times syndicate and several other noteworthy publications. From 1979 to 1982, Martin was Editor of the Hollywood Reporter; his significant contributions to the improvement of the publication were reported in Time magazine. Mr. Kent holds a Masters Degree in Broadcast Communications from Stanford University and has taught and lectured at UCLA.
